In Hebrew, Hanukkah means “dedication”, and on this festival we celebrate the re-dedication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem after Judah the Maccabee and a small force defeated the Greek army and in so doing preserved the Holy Temple for the Jewish people. Many people know the story of the Hannukah menorah. The defeated Greeks has left only one container of holy oil to light the temple menorah, when there was only but miraculously it lasted for eight. Of the many lessons learned from this story, one stands out in a special way – Dedication. It stands out for us because of the dedication we see every day from care givers all around us, who selflessly put others ahead of themselves in their homes, medical offices, hospitals, and nursing homes. This Hanukkah season, take a few moments out to allow yourself to be inspired by the dedication of others, and when you see one of these unsung heroes, wish then a happy and holy holiday season, and maybe say thank you, too.
